I’m very good _____ English! – Características da língua #24

G’day, happy people!

Dando sequência no tópico das prepositions, queria mostrar hoje algo que não é muito mostrado nas escolas ou cursos. Às vezes, por ser um pouco confuso, ou por não fazer parte de um tópico em específico, mas que é igualmente importante sabermos: Dependent prepositions.
Lembro de ter uma lista de Dependent prepositions ao final de um dos livros que eu usei enquanto aluno e de inúmeros exercícios no tópico nos workbooks dos livros que uso quando dou aula. Porém, pouca coisa no core das unidades.

Nesse post, vou demonstrar somente alguns exemplos de adjectives + prepositions e um bonus topic ao final. Lembrando que existem muitos mais exemplos e vou deixar essa parte pra você mesmo ir além e descobrir navegando nas internets.

Adjectives + prepositions

afraid of…	Are you afraid of the dark? No, I’m afraid of spiders.
angry with somebody	Are you still angry with me?
angry about something	Is he angry about the party? No, he’s angry about the football match.
different from…	You are different from your parents
fed up with…	I’m fed up with my job! (I’ve had enough of it)
full of…	The party was full of people!
good at… great at… (= have the skills/abilities to do something) bad at… horrible at… (= don’t have the skills/abilities to do something)	I’m very good at English, but I’m really bad at Spanish
good with…(= have the ability to deal with) bad with…(= don’t have the ability to deal with)	She’s good with computers but bad with numbers I don’t think I’m good with children. I don’t know how to play with them
interested in…	I’m not interested in rugby
married to…	I’m married to a Brazilian
nice/kind of somebody to… (be) nice/kind to (somebody)	It was kind of you to help tonight. Thank you so much! She is a nice lady. She’s always kind to me.
sorry about (something) sorry for (doing something)	There’s nothing else we can do. Sorry about that. Sorry for breaking your new phone!

É sempre bom memorizar essas grupos de palavras em vez de tentar memorizar qual preposition vai onde. Fazer exercícios e repetir esses chunks também ajuda a memorizar e, um dia, você vai usar a dependent preposition correta sem fazer esforço. But wait, there’s more!

Adjectives + prepositions + verb (ing)

Uma regrinha bem boa é, quando a gente usa uma preposition, o verbo que segue (quando houver um) SEMPRE vai estar na forma ING.

Are you fed up with	doing	the same job for 2 years?
