Aula grátis de inglês 04 – Mining Asteroids

G’day, keen people!

Um dos meus canais favoritos no YouTube é o Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell. São vídeos relativamente curtos e cheios de informação, apresentados usando um inglês simples e muito bem falado, fora as animações – que são muito da hora!
No post de hoje, quero trazer pra você um vídeo deles e algumas atividades bem simples pra você construir seu vocabulário e uso do idioma. Aproveite, também, pra prestar atenção na grafia versus pronúncia das palavras, uma vez que o vídeo tem legendas! As respostas de todas as tasks vão estar ao final do post.

Task #1 – Before watching the video, match the words and expressions on the left to their meanings on the right:

1. In a nutshell	a. little rocks and dry dirt
2. take something for granted	b. to turn around and around, normally fast
3. to harm	c. the amount of something that has not been used or eaten
4. Leftover	d. when something starts to be done because you are able to do it, or because you have the money to do it
5. to become more feasible	e. a short explanation that considers the main points
6. to be worthless	f. to hurt someone or to damage something
7. Spinning	g. in the direction of something or someone
8. Moving towards	h. when we believe something will stay the same as always
9. Gravel and dust	i. to pull something (normally heavy) using a machine (normally a car or boat)
10. Tow (something) away	j. to have no value in money, or is not important or not useful

Task #2 – Watch the video and answer the following questions:

1. What is the main idea of the video?
2. What is that we take for granted, according to the video?
3. What is being harmed by the mining industry, according to the video?
4. What are leftovers, according to the video?
5. What is becoming more feasible, according to the video?

Task #3 – Now, answer the following questions using your own words:

1. Have you ever bought or done anything that was worthless to you? What was it? How did you feel about it?
2. Have you ever spun around so quickly that made you feel unwell? What was it? What happened next?
3. What do you do when someone is coming towards you looking at their mobile phone? Why do you do that?
4. Are there any (or many) gravel roads in your home town/country? Where can you find them?
5. Have you ever had to have your car towed away? Why? What happened?
